UKCLE Associates Scheme
From 2005-07 UKCLE ran an Associates Scheme, aimed at involving the legal education community more closely in the Centre’s work. The appointment of Associates enabled us to develop and expand the range of resources and services were able to offer, at the same time as recognising the contribution made by members of the subject community in helping the Centre to achieve its objectives.
Our eight Associates made an active contribution to our work on a regular basis by undertaking projects, attending conferences and events as UKCLE representatives and more generally promoting the Centre and disseminating information – some examples of their work are listed below.
Our Associates
- Karen Barton (Glasgow Graduate School of Law) – was and continues to be closely involved in our work on e-learning, including the e-learning seminar series and the using e-portfolios in legal education project
- Keren Bright (Open University) – presented at our toolkit for law teaching events and developed a resource on providing effective feedback ; Keren continues to be involved in our Toolkit for law teachers project
- Paul Catley (University of the West of England) undertook research into how prospective law students choose their universities and presented on online formative assessment in the e-learning seminar series
- Rob East (University of Glamorgan) – as our Welsh representative Rob kept a watching brief on developments in Wales, as well as presenting at events and developing resources on assessment
- Alisdair Gillespie (De Montfort University) – presented at our toolkit for law teaching events and undertook research into mooting for learning
- Mark Israel (Flinders University, Australia) – developed a resource on good ethical practice in empirical research on law and briefed us on developments in legal education in Australia ; in May 2008 Mark was made a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
- Caroline Maughan (University of the West of England) – presented at our toolkit for law teaching plus a number of other events and compiled a teaching resource note on small group learning and teaching
- Maria Tighe (Leeds Metropolitan University) designed and delivered a programme and materials on performance management for the annual residential organised by UKCLE for the Committee of Heads of University Law Schools, and worked with Amanda Fancourt (then UKCLE) on a review of the student employability profile for law and its adoption by UK law schools
Working with UKCLE today
As a result of our evaluation of the Associates project, UKCLE has created two new ways of working drawing on the considerable experience of the academic community to our mutual benefit:
- academics wishing to undertake research on learning and teaching within UKCLE may apply for appointment as a Visiting Fellow or Visiting Professor under our Visiting Fellowship Scheme
- UKCLE Consultants may also be appointed from time to time to support specific strategic priorities and needs identified by the Centre
Opportunities to obtain UKCLE support to develop pedagogic research or teaching resources also continue through our various funding programmes. See further information on the:
- Project Development Fund
- Teaching resource note and subject survey series
